So how does a mycelium or a raw mushroom provide the benefits of supplementation? It is mycelium that actively takes up residence in and on the mushroom mycelium. Mycelium is actually a type of cell which supplies nutrients and energy to other cells through exocytosis. Mycelium serves as the root of the food chain, literally. Therefore, when there is a demand for a specific type of mycelium, such as casing material for mushroom growth or mycelium for mushroom consumption, the mycelium "harvest" itself and reproduce in massive amounts once the demand is satisfied.

So, what is the overall purpose of the medicinal mushroom (mycelium)? The medicinal mushroom is used to treat conditions where the mycelium is essentially over populated and unhealthy.
